glossary

Applied arts are those which have a functional purpose. This does not mean that they do not have an aesthetic aspect to them. It means that in addition to that aspect they traditionally have a use. For instance a ceramic jar has both an aesthetic aspect and a functional one. Some works that are considered applied do not have a function, but traditionally did. So, although glass works as a category traditionally has a functional aspect - drinking glasses, windows, etcetera - this work does not.
