Carving is a sculpture technique that achieves results through the removal of material from a larger mass. The most common mediums that are used in carving are marble and wood, but other stones, ivory, etcetera can be used. Ice and soap have also been used, but these tend to be more ephemeral. Different mediums require different kinds of tools – stone – wood. Some more modern electric tools are used as well (see the example above).
