glossary

When a person stands in a relaxed position most of the weight is supported on one side with the opposite knee bent. This term is mostly associated with figure sculptures, but can be seen in other forms of art that feature human figures as well. This is the stance called contrapposto. As it is a stance, it does not imply movement. Here is a sculpture by Michelangelo. Notice that David's weight has shifted to his right side with his left knee bent. This stance often will position the body with a slight twist resulting in what is often referred to as an 'S' curve of the body.
