In some works the intent of the artist is to draw the participant’s attention to a specific focal point within the work. In this work the focal point is there joined hands which leads the participant’s eye to the mirror, as well as the signature. Focal point is more than just a general area of emphasis but one that is specific. A work can have one focal point or several. In This work by Chagall the tension of complementary green and red first draw attention to the right side of the work, but there are several other points of focus that reveal more clearly the dream-like meaning of the work.
