Trompe l’oeil is French for ‘fool the eye’. Another name for this is illusionism. The goal of the artist representing subject matter in this manner is to present something that looks like it is not a painting or a sculpture but a real object. For instance, in Escaping Criticism by Pere Borrell del Caso parts of the painting appear as if they are in front of the frame, but of course that is just an illusion. In this way it goes beyond just presenting the subject matter in a realistic manner.
