glossary

Infrastructure refers to the overall design of a community. In most cases this design is achieved to best facilitate the delivery of services to that community. This includes where businesses, housing, community centers, churches, parks, etcetera will be placed. But, it also includes how things like water, sewage, and roads will be managed. All of these to some degree are an aspect of architecture either directly or indirectly. In a well-designed infrastructure the aesthetic of the overall design will also be evident. Such was the redesign of Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century. The first champions of an extended infrastructure were the ancient Romans. It was through the network of roads, bridges, and aqueducts that the Roman Empire built that provided a way to address the needs of the military and the communities that became part of that empire.
