An intaglio print involves a technique that etches the image into a metal plate, spreads the ink which settles in those recessions, and then presses paper forcing it into those recessions. This transfers the ink in just those places onto the paper. Although printing techniques do have their idiosyncrasies that can be discerned when looking at the final product, they are hard to differentiate. One advantage of this technique is that unlike relief prints the plate never really wears out and so when the print run is done, meaning the artist only wanted a run of a certain number, the plate is cancelled.
