Actual light and shadow is almost exclusively relegated to works in three dimensions. It occurs when light shines on an object and the areas that are not flat create shadows. For instance if the shadows of this frieze made from one medium were not there, it would appear as a flat surface. It is the shadows that exist in these works that contributes to being recognize depth. It is also a way that implied textures can be suggested in sculptures. Compare this photograph with this sculpture. The real textures in the first are approximated through the use of light and shadow on the intricate surfaces of the second. This impact of light and shadow is also evident in architectural works. This use of actual light and shadow is what inspired painters to duplicate this effect with the implied light and shadow of chiaroscuro, as in this work by Francesco Hayez.
