Make-up in a play (or a film) can exist in one of three ways. In a play as the audience is farther from the performers it serves to accentuate facila features. It can also aid characterization. Costumes are part of the mise en scene that in some ways define the characters. What a character wears can establish class, occupation, relationships, psychological characteristics.
