Participation in all things means active involvement. Think of it in terms of a personal relationship. If one person is not participating, then the relationship will not be strong. Participation requires time spent with that person or, in this case, work of art. The more time spent the stronger the connection. This does not mean that one will like the work more, but it certainly give the work a better chance to be appreciated and understood.
