glossary

Rustication is an architecture term that describes an actual texture within a structure created either through bevels in the surface or through a roughened surface. This texture gives that surface a more interesting contrast. Often rustication is found on the lower portion of a structure to give it more definition. In this work contrasts are very clear. The top story features no rustication at all, the middle story features beveled stonework, and the bottom is both bevelled and roughened.
