glossary

The set in a play is the general setting for the action. As such, it is an important aspect of the mise en scene. In some cases there is only one set for the entire play. In others, several sets would be used. If the interpretation of the play is more abstract, then the set will create an atmosphere of theatricality. If the interpretation strives for a more realistic approach the set will create verisimilitude. Like theater some films are shot on studio sets. But others may be shot partially or entirely on location.
