Terracotta refers to works that are clay based but usually not glazed. The word literally means ‘baked clay’ and is dried (fired) in a kiln at lower temperatures than other works that are clay based (pottery, stoneware, porcelain, etcetera) These works are made using the modeling technique of sculpture. Terracotta works can often be identified by the brownish-red coloring of the medium. These works can also be used ornamentally in architecture as in this terracotta frieze.
