glossary

Texture is an interesting element of design, as it is one that in most cases is experienced without using the sense that it appeals to the most - the sense of touch. Look but don’t touch applies to most paintings, sculpture, and in many cases architecture. In music, the concept is so abstract that it does not really involve the sense of touch at all. In the visual arts, texture can be experienced through actual textures, as well as implied textures. In the case of sculptures that are realistic both apply.
In the serial and combined arts, and to a lesser extent some paintings, texture can refer to the weaving of ideas together.
In music, texture is experienced through layering and weaving ideas together. Bear in mind that some of these are visual as well and as such the visual textures will also come into play. Actual texture is found in every work that is in three dimensions and is dependent on the materials.
