Transitions are an important part of arranging the segments of a film. In almost every case these transitions occur during the editing process. The quickest transition is a direct cut. It reinforces a faster pace. Direct cuts have also become the most common transition from segment to segment. Slower transitions include fades, dissolves, wipes, and irises. These slow the pace and tend to give those moments in the film more breathing space.
