Urban sprawl occurs when a city has expanded past its original borders into the comunities or rural area surrounding it. This usually takes the form of suburbs and in some cases a loss of the identity of those towns and smaller cities that it envelops. This often makes those areas less planned out, less community centered, more segregated in terms of housing and businesses, and more dependent on cars for travel.
