A veneer is any thin layer of material that is placed on another material to make it look like the entire object is made out of the thinner material. In most cases the thinner layer is made of a more aesthetic (often more expensive) material. In architecture it could be masonry on top of a skeleton, or marble on top of concrete, or stone on top of a wooden frame.
