glossary

Vertical refers to an orientation that is taller rather than wider. In some cases this can refer to a line within the work such as the pitch fork or the orientation of the figures in this work by Grant Wood, in others it can refer to the orientation of the entire work itself. It can be an actual line or an implied line, as in the balconies in this structure. A film term that has a relationship to vertical line is that of the tilt shot which moves up and down in an implied vertical line.
