Visual works of art are those that appeal to the visual senses as opposed to serial works which appeal to our auditory ones. Painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, etcetera are the strictly visual works. Film and theater productions (plays, musicals, operas, dance forms, etcetera) have a visual, as well as serial component.
