As a building material, concrete was first used by ancient Rome in a dramatic way to improve both construction of buildings and to improve infrastructure. The use of concrete in buildings provided a way to make the systems already in use to be more sturdy. Many of those built during ancient Rome are still standing today more than 2000 years later. The use of concrete can also be found in aqueducts and bridges from ancient Rome as well. Modern day concrete is more uniform in its composition and is also frequently reinforced with iron or steel to give it more tensile strength.
