glossary

An establishing shot is a shot in cinematography that introduces the viewer to a location. This is often the case when either a location is being introduced or a location that has already been introduced is established again as a reminder. A shot that shows the New York skyline establishes that the location of those events (at least for that portion of the film) will occur in New York. A shot that shows the inside of a room may establish the significance that the room will have within the next scene or within the film as a whole. In some cases an establishing shot can establish some aspect of a character, such as Sherlock Holmes silouette with his pipe, or Shakespeare's profession with the pen and ink at the beginning of Shakespeare in Love.
