Unlike other shots in film a follow shot is not necessarily one shot but a series of shots that follows the character from one place to another. The general purpose of this is to see that progression of places and understand something important about that character as a result. Imagine a person going to the store to buy nylons, drives to the main street, parks the car, ducks into an alley and cuts the nylon putting it over his head, then goes around the corner into the bank with a gun. The camera, through a variety of different shots, follows the character’s every move.
