A leitmotif is a motif (usually musical) that represents a character of some kind. It could be a person, or place, or even an idea. One of the most recognizable examples of leitmotif is John Williams theme for the great white shark in the film Jaws. It can also be a phrase that is associated with a character or in the case of "Live long and prosper" an entire culture - Vulcan of Star Trek.
