A motif is a short three to six note fragment that is used as an organizational unit. Motifs can be just rhythmic or they can be melodic. Often this fragment is used to create an underlying rhythmic structure. They can also be used to develop a melodic phrase. Often the motif is not meant to be recognized as an identifiable component. But, in some cases, the motif is the principal focus of the music.
