glossary

Melody is comprised of successive pitches within an established rhythm. In that way it is much like line in the visual arts. If the melodic movement is conjunct then it will be more like a straight or curved line. If it is more disjunct then it will have sharp angles to it. A melody can have a restricted range or a wide range. They can be long or short. Most melodies are made from smaller fragments called motifs. If a melody has enough character the listener will get 'hooked' even if it is the first time hearing it.
