A pan shot or panning refers to a shot that follows the subject from side to side without moving the camera's position. This is distinct from a track shot which does move the camera at the same pace as the subject. Imagine a car starting on the left side of the screen with the camera focused upon it. As it proceeds across the road the camera swivels to follow it. The camera itself is stationary.
