Perspective is the general principle of how artists communicate the illusion of depth in a two-dimensional work of art. The only other element that really contributes significantly to this illusion is chiaroscuro. There are several terms that fall under the umbrella of perspective, such as linear perspective, overlapping perspective, position perspective, aerial perspective, and foreshortening.
