Serial works or those that have a serial component communicate their art through an amount of time. In the case of film that usually is a specific time - Orson Welles' Citizen Kane has a running time of 119 minutes. Plays and symphonies are not as specific but do have general times. Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor is approximately 30 minutes depending on the conductor's tempi and expressive tendencies. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette can last from 90 minutes to three hours depending on what scenes are used. The length of an entire work is one aspect of scale in works that have a serial component.
Other temporal considerations are evident in analyzing works to determine how long each part of that work is in relationship to the others, as well as the whole work. This is an aspect of proportion.
Temporal considerations are also an important factor in appreciating other works, especially architecture, as it takes time to move through and/or around these works. Each new view reveals a new aspect of that work.
