Variety makes works of art more interesting through variation. Most works tend to have a balance of unity and variety, but one is usually is dominant. Variety is created by creating contrasts and differences within works of art. In that sense it breaks the continuity and is the opposite of unity. Abstract works often rely on this idea of variety in works by distorting some element making it less recognizable. variety within a work can also be created by presenting something never before seen or presenting in such a way that it is a completely new representation of that idea.
