Tension in the arts is the principle of design that creates the most drama. A good story will always have tension. If it doesn't then the story tends to lose its interest. In paintings tension is created when something dynamic happens either through the subject matter or within one or more of the elements. Often abstract works of art will rely on the distortion of some element to give that work its abstract quality. Tension in architecture is often perceieved in a structure that has some aspect that is unusual or not balanced. Tension in arts that have a story or plot rely on conflict to communicate that tension. In music the concept that creates the most tension is that of dissonance. Dynamics, disjunct melodies, strident timbres, complex rhythms, and thick textures can also create tension, just not as consistently as dissonance. Tension also contributes to variety within a work or even between works of art.
